Dual Immersion Program

Spanish Immersion Program

“We live in a global era that shapes world politics, commerce, the environment, and international relations.  Our increasingly connected world cries out for cultural understanding and for the desire and the ability of different nationalities to communicate.”

Lore Carrera-Carrillo & Annette Smith
Burlingame School District Board recognizing the need to better prepare our students for the 21st century approved the development of the Two-Way Bilingual Immersion Program in the fall of 2007 at McKinley Elementary School. The Two-Way Bilingual Immersion program provides an immersion model for English-speaking students and a bilingual model for Spanish-speaking students. The content of the curriculum is the same as English-only classrooms and meets all the state standards.  The goal of the immersion program is to make students, whether they enter as English or Spanish speakers, fully bilingual through grade 8.

Amity Intern Program

Amity Institute Intern Program at Burlingame School District

Every year, Burlingame School District (BSD) invites Spanish speaking Amity Institute interns. These interns primarily work with the Dual Language Spanish Immersion classrooms, but also spend some time assisting in Spanish language classes, ESL classes, and general education classrooms. Interns are welcomed into McKinley Elementary School and Burlingame Intermediate school.

The Amity Institute

Founded in 1962 and based in San Diego, CA, Amity Institute facilitates international exchange programs. It’s Educational Internship Program provides future educators the opportunity to gain teaching skills under the direct supervision of a certified teacher in an American classroom. The Amity Institute Program is based on the belief that cultural exchange enables greater international understanding and friendship. During their assignment, participants volunteer for approximately 32 hours per week under the guidance of an experienced teacher.

Amity interns must be at least 20 years old, speak English and be enrolled at a college/university or have graduated no longer than 12 months before the start date of their program. Participants must have a career goal in education. Most importantly, interns must have an enthusiasm for working with US students and enjoy intercultural communication. Interns commit their time and energy as volunteer foreign language teaching assistants to their host schools and in return receive the opportunity to live, learn and teach in the USA. Host schools recruit volunteer host families who provide free room and board. To find out more about Amity please visit

Hosting an Amity Intern in your Home

Are you or your kids learning Spanish? Want to expose your family to Spanish culture? Want to share our wonderful Burlingame Community with an enthusiastic young adult? BSD is always looking for potential families to host Amity Interns for the Fall or Spring school year. Currently, the interns work as teaching assistants at McKinley Elementary and BIS. Obligations of the host families include:

  • Room and board (meals)
  • Private bedroom
  • A nurturing, helpful environment throughout the intern's stay
  • Note: You do NOT need to speak Spanish in your household - the interns are coming in part to improve their English language skills

What's it like to host? ....The experience from a past host family.....

"Our goal in hosting was to provide our Amity interns with a family experience where we engaged in a meaningful relationship and to share the best of the Bay Area with them...[with our recent intern] the emphasis has been on sharing our culture by cooking together, playing games, learning music together and traveling. We have enjoyed the experience immensely and look forward to many more memory-making experiences before she leaves." - BSD family hosted a total of two Amity interns

Silvia París Martín (McKinley Elementary School)

I’m Silvia and I’m from a little village of Palencia, Spain, in the Palentine mountain. My village is Fresno Del Río.

In June, I graduated with a degree of elementary education, teaching English.

In my free time I love traveling, to ride a horse, go to the beach and the pool, going for a walk into the woods or around the town, I love nature and animals (I have a dog), listening to music, to dance, to sing, to watch series and movies, go shopping, take photos, to read, and to spend time with my family and friends, and my little cousins, I enjoy a lot when I spend time with the little ones.

Mayra Alejandra Otálora (Burlingame Intermediate School)

My name is Mayra Alejandra Otálora, I’m 26 years old and I’m from Colombia. I’m studying a B.A. in English at Universidad del Tolima. I really like teaching and helping others. I live with my parents in Ibagué – Tolima.

In my free time, I love singing (although I do not do it professionally!), spending time with my family and friends, camping in the mountains, riding a bicycle or walking around the city. I love cooking and preparing cocktails for special dates. I am passionate about traveling and visiting other places and getting to know different cultures. I like to take different courses for my personal and professional growth. I consider myself a responsible, committed, active, enterprising, open-minded, flexible, and friendly person. I'm so excited about living this experience!

Maria José Hernández (McKinley Elementary School)

Maria Jose

I am 20 years old, from Ibagué-Colombia. I am studying B.A. in English at Tolima University, and I am in 6th semester. I enjoy spending time with my family, going to family dinners and watching movies. I have 2 siblings, Juan and Sofia, I am the oldest of the three of us, and a dog called Hela.

When I am studying I spend most of my time writing essays or reading academic papers, so in my free time, I like to paint, draw and read books related to poetry or romance. Music is one of my passions, I enjoy going to concerts and discovering new music all the time. I love museums and outside activities, especially working out. I have been working as a part-time seller for almost 2 years, so I don’t have the chance to travel really often because my schedules are really busy, but when I do, I like traveling to the countryside, and knowing new places.

I am very excited to learn from your culture, your customs, and traditions, and at the same time, doing what I love the most–sharing my culture and learning new things. I can’t wait to meet you all and immerse myself in new adventures!
